Gam-MLS Wrap: Futty’s Timbers stroll to win, Sanna’s Impact falter while Sainey’s Revs held

The Portland Timbers of Mamadou “Futty” Danso scored their first goal in more than a month to snap a three-game losing streak with a 2-1 win over the Chicago Fire.
Futty missed the game through suspension and fine by the Major League Soccer Disciplinary Committee but that didn’t stop Eric Brunner to give the Oregon side the lead after 20 minutes to end his side’s 448-minute goalless drought in the MLS.
Defender Hanyer Mosquera headed a Franck Songo’o corner towards Kris Boyd whose bicycle kick was slotted in by Brunner. But Chicago’s Jalil Anibaba equalized late in the first half to give his side the chance to take something of the Timbers for the first time. They have failed to take a point from Portland in three matches.
Seven minutes into the second half, Portland’s substitute Sal Zizzo found Boyd at the near post and the ball went into the net off Fire midfielder Logan Pause.
The win lifts Futty’s Timbers ahead of defending champions LA Galaxy, who slump to the bottom of the Western Conference.
They will play a friendly against Spanish La Liga side Valencia on Wednesday before hosting Mustapha “Toubabo” Jarju’s former team Vancouver on Saturday.
Elsewhere, the New York Red Bulls recorded their fifth straight MLS win against the Montreal Impact of Sanna Nyassi.
Eastern Conference leaders the Red Bulls, still without star striker Thierry Henry, came from behind to beat the Sanna’s Impact 2-1. Bernardo Corradi and Kenny Cooper traded first-half penalties, before the game appeared to turn in the Impact’s favour on 58 minutes.
Victor Palsson picked up his second yellow card to be sent off, but it was the Red Bulls who responded despite their numerical disadvantage. Dane Richards struck the winner in the 67th minute, side-footing into the roof of the net from inside the area.
Finally, a brace from Saër Sène was not enough for Sainey Nyassi’s New England Revolution, who were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw at home to the Houston Dynamo of Macoumba Kandji.
